This is the scene outside one of Kollam’s biggest theaters. For those who don’t follow Malayalam, the board reads – “Due to faulty compressor, the AC doesn’t work today”. I am not talking about the air conditoner alone. The broken seats, the bug ridden seat handles, the dingy smell and in some theaters, I have seen cats waling between rows of seats.
With more than 75% films releasing a year turning out to be duds, we are in a time when family audience are staying out of theaters, waiting for the movie verdict and then opting to wait till the movie comes out in DVD. When Malayalam cinema is in such a mess, shouldn’t the exhibitors do better than this? After all, they raise the ticket charge every year.

August 31st, 2009Aradhana is a good theatre. Mostly clean and keeps running the AC.
September 3rd, 2009this is true in many theaters. 4 years back in one 1s class theater a person was bitten by snake. dhanya and pranavam are the best theater while archana, aradana is gud and prince ok while grand and kumar pathetic. but all have same rate for ticket
September 10th, 2009Now you know why people arenot coming to see films in theatres amd instead prefer to see CD/DVD at home. Our theatres were built more than 30 yearsback in an era when there was no Satellite channels and internet! They were never maintained properly and uses obsolete projectors. You ahould see the multiplexes in other states and see the people crowding to see any film.It is because of the comforts and facilities that makes theatre going an outing experience for the whole family. You can do shopping and eat your favourite foods etc. Even if it costs more they get their money’s worth. Here you dontget proper parking, get crushed in the ‘Q’, broken seats with rats running around, no A/C, dim picture, poor sound quality ( Resul Pookutty experiences in Pzhassi Raja at our thetres) dirty toilets etc.
Unless the theatres improve there is no hope for the Malayalam film industry.
